poor life decisions

for those of you who do not follow me on twitter and/or follow me around (if the latter is true, please get help), two very bad mistakes were made yesterday.

the first occurred when I went to cvs and had to wait for them to fill a prescription. if I walk around cvs for those 5-10 minutes I will inevitably end up buying candy, lawn decorations, toolish makeup or a bedazzler (you either know exactly what I'm talking about or you don't need to). yesterday the first of those was my downfall as I tried to find a shortcut to the pharmacy and instead found a bag of twizzlers bigger than my head. for those of you who don't know, I am allergic to red dye #40. it has an... effect on me.

I am consuming the second half of that bag as I type this. but that's not even the hilarious poor life decision! though it may have contributed to my inability to stop laughing when the second one happened:

while I worked off the red dye by bouncing off the walls and possibly dancing to some very bad 80s music, my dad was outside mowing. over my possibly very bad music I heard the usual brrrrrrr of the lawnmower, and then suddenly, brrrrrrRRR-B-B-BROMPH! ...and it stopped. I first assumed he had run over a stick, or maybe even a squirrel, and had stopped to fish the pieces out. but no:

r.i.p. welcome mat

...we're gonna need a new mower.

this place is made of flypaper

open-mindedness is always a good thing, it seems. turns out a lot of people love the spanish speakers; hopefully they'll also love this particular one :D I've found a really cool company that has a strong emphasis on community service and helping customers IRL, which is awesome. it gives me a lot of hope to know that places like that exist, and that they want people with my major, which I was beginning to worry had confined me to teaching and translating. so it seems there may be good things on the horizon. ...hopefully leading to re-creating the crazy apartment from last summer in madison :D

as for the title of the post, I swear this entire city is made of flypaper. you can't leave, and you are hopelessly naive to ask someone from here to help you leave. some version of this conversation is inevitable: "I know people around here, what kind of work are you looking for?" "um, work that is somewhere else." "oh, you don't like it here??" ".....no." "hmm. well... you could work at [local company], it's a foot in the door!" more like a foot on the flypaper if you ask me, and it only takes one foot to get you stuck.

*disclaimer: I'm not actually down about this, it's just a bizarre local phenomenon I've been noticing--people are shocked to hear of anyone that doesn't want to settle down here, and they can't imagine living anywhere else. I begin to wonder about a city-wide case of stockholm syndrome...
